[JOM MAKAN] DINING AT HANAZEN, JAYA ONE P.J

Monday, May 3, 2010
Japanese food anyone? 4 friends and I went to Hanazen on May 1, 2010 and all of us leave the restaurant with a satisfying smile and a choice of favourite dish each.

When we first arrived at the restaurant, it was not packed but it seems that there is no suitable table for the 5 of us. Well, I can't really comment much on this as we should have place a reservation in the first place. In the end we decided to add a chair to a table for 4. I have to admit that it was a bit crowded especially when the foods we ordered were presented. Looking at the menu, we were surprised as the proportion of food shown were quite large. Hence, we decided to go for sharing basis. Plus, we wanted to eat more than 1 set per person. In total, we ordered 1 appetizer, 3 sets dinner and 5 desserts.

We started off with Zaru Soba, Udon Suki and Chicken Teri set. When the food were presented it was not as large as suggested. Yeah, we were tricked by the power of photography. Still we had a minor problem as there is no enough space to place the food.

Chicken Teri Set

Back to the food, it was OK. Not bad and not outstanding either. Merit points were granted for the miso soup as it was tasty with lot of ingrediants (tofu, seaweeds) and the big prawns in the Udon Suki set. Even as we only ordered 3 dinner sets (we tried to ordered 4 dinner sets but one of it was sold out), it was quite fulfilling as  Udon Suki set were meant for 2 (the Zaru Soba and Chicken Teri set were meant for a single customer). Still, I believe that we can still eat and decided to add another dish, appetizer. Initially I decided to go for a dish of mash potato with cheese but it was not available so we picked Soft Shell Crab.

Soft Shell Crab

Ordering it was the highlight of the dinner! IT WAS DELICIOUS! Crispy on the shell and yet succulent and soft for the meat. It was tasty enough that we can eat it right away without dipping in the souce. Instantly, it becomes my favourite dish of the night. One of my friend feels that this dish is better than the one from Munakata. As for the serving, it was quite large and enough for the 5 of us.

Next, we were spoiled with the choice of ice-cream available. Apart from the conventional flavour like chocolate and some ordinary flavour that one can find in any Japanese restaurant such as black sesame, Hanazen also offers wasabi, lavendar, sakura, pistachio and citrus. There were others flavours but I can't recall those as the above are the ones that we ordered. However, we ended ordering 4 only as sakura, pistachio and citrus were sold out (again). Apart from that we also ordered Itachoco Monaka (dessert of biscuit with ice-cream and chocolate in the middle).

Lavender, Wasabi, Chocolate and Black Sesame

Among 4 of the ice-cream, I like black sesame the best. On another hand, lavender is something that I could not tolerate and certainly would not recommend. Both ice-creams were so rich in taste (especially the Lavendar ice-cream) that it lingers even after several cups of green tea.

Itachoco Monaka

My first encounter with Itachoco Monaka was at Sushi Zanmai and I liked it since then. So, it is something that I would not forgo when I saw it on the menu.

There is actually one corner in the restaurant set up for magazines in Chinese and English. So after finishing the meal, we stayed for a while, chatting and flipping through the magazines. We left the restaurant around 10 pm and yeah, I will be back!

[MOVIE REVIEW] ICE KACANG PUPPY LOVE

Sunday, May 2, 2010
Petaling Jaya, Tropicana City Mall | May 1, 2010 (Saturday) :

I am one of those people who prefer to watch horror and thriller than love movie. Hence, it is not my norm to suggest and ask my friends to such movie. However, the same can not be said for this movie which was Ah Niu's directorial debut. First of all, I am not a fan of his. I mean I have no special opinions on his songs nor acting. It is the comments and reviews that triggers my interest and those have been positive thus far. So, are those sheer  sympathetic and bias votes as this is made and starred by Malaysians? I wonder...

Ice Kacang Puppy Love is a movie that was basically produced locally starring some of the biggest name of our Malaysia Chinese artists such as Angelica Lee (Fighting Fish), Gary Chaw (Ma Ling Fan), Victor Wong (Prince Charming), Fish Leong (Barley Ice), Yi Jet Qi (Botak's brother) and the director, Ah Niu himself (Botak). Apart from that, some of the older local artists which have been off radar for quite some time can also be spotted. These includes Eric Moo (Fighting Fish's dad) and Angela Chan Mei Ngor (Fighting Fish's mum). As the title suggested, the plot focused on the puppy love of the lead character (Ah Niu) and his friends. It was a 6 angles love story as it involves 6 of the characters. Just imagine a typical story line where A fall for B but B fall for C and C for A. But in this case there are 6 people involved rather than 3. Chaos, you say? Well, thanks to the simplicity in story telling and scripting, it is not that confusing at all.

Apart from that, there are other issues which were portrayed. Yet, it is the agony and difficulties for a single mother raising her child and the impact of the failure in marriage towards the children which were shown by Fighthing Fish and her mum that made me ponders. As the saying goes (pinyin in Cantonese) "Nam jui pa yap cho hong, lui jui pa ga cho long". There is also an interesting character of a Hakka old man in the movie which was seen sitting in a corner of the coffee shop gazing at the window waiting for the day where he would be reunited with his wife in China. Even as the old man was not the focus here, the message delivered by his character was meaningful. Live life to the fullest, life is short after all!

Through out the whole movie, there are a lot of silly and humorous scenes. Some of the comedy slapsticks were quite familiar as it reminded me of other movies that I have seen before. From the character of Botak's overweight sister putting up ghostly make-up and tried to confess her love reminds me of Zhao Wei in Shaolin Soccer. The combo of fatty-skinny-clumsy-clueless sidekick of Ma Ling Fan were also hilarious. Not to forget the scene where the duo chasing after Botak's sister in an attempt for love confession.

Still, the most note worthy point of the this movie is the effort of the production. There are a lot of props used which reflected the time line and brings me back to my childhood: the old Ringgit Malaysia notes, the guli game, the fighting fish, the Indian man riding motorcycle to sell bread and junk food. Well, I have not seen those for a long time since... many years ago?Another thing that I like best is the usage of azan (the Muslim summons to prayer) to signify the time. Other significant elements of Malaysia potpourri of race and culture were certainly detected in the language and script. Perhaps it would be best summarised as made by Malaysian for Malaysian.

I would say the downfall for Ice Kacang Puppy Love is how Botak can be miraculously appear at the bus terminal to meet Fighting Fish even the scene before is where his bicycle was hit and he fall on the road. Hmmm... At in all, I support the verdict that this is indeed a worth watch movie. A simply storyline and story telling that leave me light-hearted as I leave the cinema.

Kick start blogging!

Saturday, May 1, 2010
Exam ended! So is my identity as a student. I guess that most of the people around me will be interested in my next course of action. What will I do? Is PhD next? Preparing the big letter for the new mission?

Well, no and not yet. PhD is definitely not in the picture. Too tough and I certainly feels like I have been studying for ages. It has been a continuous journey apart from those months when I was in IBM. It seems like the 'student status' have never been separated from me. So, I would like to just take a break, away from those nostalgic schedule of rushing between office and university, meeting due date for both work and study related assignments. Since me is just mere human, I believe a break will be able to fuel and motivates me again to charge ahead! As for the new mission, timing is crucial. There is still something that I wanted to do and accomplished. Once it is completed, I will then carefully crave my next action plan. So for the time being, I just have to follow the momentum of the pendulum swings.

Nonetheless, as what I have written in FB, my focus now is to resume my abandoned netizen's life, complete and upload the overdue videos, and start my training for the KL Marathon and KK Trip. Looking at the calendar, it seems like I do not have much time left as the marathon is in June and the trip in July. Hopefully I will be able to finish the marathon in time this year!
